One step at a time

About our "One step at a time" boxes

We know that some days can be really hard, and making small changes one step at a time can help with brushing, eating and drinking and going to the dentist. That’s why we’ve made special “One step at a time” boxes throughout the webite. These give you small tips to try, step by step. They’re just a starting point for tough days, and the idea is to build up from there. Think of these boxes as friendly reminders to make things manageable. It’s all about taking small steps and being kind to yourself. Hear from Nikki and Shila below, as they share their experiences.

Building toothbrushing habits one step at a time

Brushing teeth can be tricky for many autistic children, so we’ve made a step-by-step guide to help. Each step is there to help your child feel more OK with brushing, and you can take your time. You’ll also find helpful tips, advice, and stories from other parents on the toothPASTE website. We want to help make toothbrushing a more positive part of your day, no matter where your family is on this journey.

Building eating and drinking habits one step at a time

For some families, success might mean a child feeling comfortable touching new food with a fork or their hand, while for others, it could be gently placing food near their lips or simply sitting calmly around unfamiliar foods. These moments of progress, no matter how small, are worth celebrating.

If you’re feeling unsure, take inspiration from Shila who shared their one-step-at-a-time story. Their experiences remind us that progress isn’t about perfection but about moving forward in ways that work for your family.
