Using apps to build toothbrushing routines
Overview
The use of apps depends on your child and how this may fit in with their toothbrushing routine. For some parents, toothbrushing apps can help encourage children to brush. Some apps include playing the child’s favourite song or watching their favourite character brush their teeth at the same time. Although this can be helpful, some parents find that adding something else to the toothbrushing routine can make things more challenging. Some children become overstimulated by the music, making it harder to move on to the next stage of their routine, whether this be getting ready for school, or going to bed. For others videos or apps can be a helpful distraction. Think about whether an app would be helpful or if this may make your toothbrushing experience more difficult.

If you think apps may work for your child, there are lots available. Some apps include video clips on YouTube of their favourite characters. This may be helpful, especially if you can find a video of this character brushing their teeth. Other useful apps can include things like BrushDJ, which allows you to play your favourite song for two minutes whilst brushing. Some parents have found it useful when it is turned into a game, like Pokemon Smile.
