0:00 – Intro

0:50 – Sensory preparation

• It is useful to think of the dental visit as part of a 24-hour period to reserve their energy for that period

• Asking for a morning appointment can help to reduce anticipation for the appointment throughout the day

• A later appointment can be better for a child whose energy levels are better later in the day

• Trying to stay consistent with the child’s regular routine whilst scheduling activities which won’t deplete their energy before the appointment can be beneficial

• It is important to try to keep the time around the appointment as calm and relaxed as possible

• Plan your exit strategy in advance, know the building and area well, and plan soothing activities for after the visit

4:41 – The end of the dental visit

• Letting the dentist know that you won’t be able to stay around after the appointment to book a follow-up appointment can avoid extending the visit

• Follow-up appointments can be made in other ways, such as over the phone

5:04 – Using fidget toys

• Most of the time fidgets can be a good way of distracting and comforting the child, and to regulate through their hands

• These can only become problematic if the child refuses to move them away from their mouth, but are otherwise very beneficial

Be kind to yourself: Remember that it’s okay to have challenging days. Celebrate small victories and progress. Being patient and compassionate with yourself is just as important as being kind to your child.
